sUAS Level 1 Infrared Thermography
Level I Infrared Thermography Applications Training + Operational Readiness Training for Infrared Thermal Drones/sUAS
This Level I infrared thermography course covers the theory and operational use of infrared thermal imaging drones (a.k.a. small unmanned aerial systems or "sUAS"). Drones/sUAS with thermal imaging capability add to the range of applications that infrared thermography can be applied to since: 1) the thermal imager can be flown in areas and altitudes that are otherwise difficult or impossible to reach any other way and 2) some significant and important parts of the workflow associated with gathering the target imaging data can be automated--IF the right combination of drone, sensors, and software that are compatible with the work are employed.
Level I material includes infrared theory, heat transfer concepts, overview of infrared thermography applications and associated inspection techniques, and operation of thermal imaging equipment to capture high quality thermal images that are clear, concise and possible to interpret. Students are challenged daily with hands on demonstrations, experiments and inspection situations similar to those they will experience in their work. This course fully meets the educational requirements for certification according to the published recommendations of ASNT.
This course combines our base Level I infrared thermography application training with drone specific content: selection of drone/sUAS platforms, drone thermal sensors (payloads), flight and image capture automation software. The course also places emphasis on additional applications that are well suited to the use of drones: inspection of commercial buildings and roofs, solar photovoltaic systems, and electrical power transmission.
We'll cover key techniques for finding and solving problems using infrared thermography. The participants, upon completion of the training, will have an understanding of the basic heat theory necessary for successfully employing infrared thermography into their work. They will be able to capture clear thermograms and make basic inferences and diagnosis. Furthermore, they'll have a basic understanding of mission planning for conducting surveys involving infrared thermal imaging drones/sUAS.
